The idea came to me when I saw a documentary on ARD (German Television) about cheerleaders. I was actually expecting artistic jumps from confident and good-looking women. Instead, it was mainly about the fact that everyone can do anything and nothing matters (in short: body positivity). To my surprise, the cheerleaders on show wore long pants.
Is it really so bad to be a decorative accessory? Showing off your sexy side and then surprising people with great sporting performances? And what was that again with the players' wives? And there are male cheerleaders as well, anyways, right?
Whatever. Thanks for the idea of cheerleading though. Good food for thought. I've only seen cheerleading live once in my life. That were the University of Arizona cheerleaders and it was many, many years ago. In 1995, I got to see a Wildcats game and since I don't know anything about American football, I only had an eye for the cheerleaders' performances.
Nastya has always wanted to be a cheerleader. So she put on the costume and off we went on our shoot. I spent one and a half days on the pictures and took photos at various locations over several hours.
I also took the liberty of using different lenses for this shoot. While I usually shoot mostly with my 55mm f/1.8 Sony Zeiss, I also used my 25mm Zeiss Batis lens in this series. I even used my 85mm lens so that I could be variable in my pictures with different bokeh looks.
In between, Nastya asked me if the colors of her jersey weren't the Russian colors. Ufff, that went deep! But I was able to reassure her. Of course they are the colors of the American flag. After all, cheerleading comes from the USA and not from Russia. It's just bitter when history and the war keep catching up with you, even during shootings.
It was definitely worth it that I took so much time with the series. And I can't help but think back to when Playboy productions ran for a whole week in the 80s. There was no such thing as online back then. So a week's work to finally produce 10 photos for the magazine. Those must have been great times!
We also had great fun when we went to a coffee shop during our lunch break. The look on other women's faces when Nastya entered the room in her cheerleading costume was priceless.
Nastya is such a great person. I have to admit, she has become a real muse for me.
I'm somehow really happy again that I bought such cool shoes for the shoot. Maybe I should auction them off.
Quick update: The whole outfit, including the shoes is already sold now.
