Mood Boards Made Easy

Mood Boards Made Easy

We've all been there: A photo shoot is coming up, and you need to quickly print some inspiring reference images. Not as rigid templates to copy — that would be boring — but as visual cues. A small mood board, if you will, to help break through creative blocks when ideas run dry.

Reading time: 1 Min.

Until now, this meant fiddling around in Photoshop. Placing images one by one, scaling, aligning … you know the drill. And let's be honest: Who has time for that?

So I thought: There must be an easier way. After a few hours of tinkering, I created a simple but effective Photoshop script. Here's the magic: You select between 2 and 30 images — everything else (scaling, sorting alphabetically and positioning) happens automatically. The script creates a perfectly formatted A4 sheet, either portrait or landscape, depending on what works best with your references.

Bonus: The images are automatically converted to black and white and optimized for brightness and contrast. Your printer will thank you.

Installation is straightforward

  1. Download and unzip
  2. Save Mood Board.jsx on Windows at C:\Program Files X86\Adobe\Photoshop [Version]\Presets\Scripts\ or on Mac at /Applications/Adobe Photoshop [Version]/Presets/Scripts/
  3. Restart Photoshop
  4. Mood Board will conveniently appear under File > Scripts
  5. Select your images, click OK, done

Download the script now. And when you find yourself using it at every shoot — you're welcome! And welcome to the cheat sheet optimizers club!
