Some of my work functions brilliantly in a series. They tell a story when placed together, build tension, complement each other. For a magazine, a book, an editorial spread — perfect. But alone on a wall? Something's missing. Others are made for calendars, work well in that monthly rhythm, but after four weeks you've had your fill. Maybe the presentation is also too erotic there (if such a thing even exists). And then images surface where I immediately think: this is something someone wants to see when they're drinking their morning coffee or sitting on the couch in the evening.
What people actually choose to hang on their walls continues to surprise me, by the way. I've stood in apartments where decisions were made that I could never understand. And no, before you ask: my own home isn't covered in nude photos. My office, however, is. There I swap out two large-format works quarterly, behind museum glass, in proper wooden frames. A small rotation to keep my own perspective fresh.
But back to my point: the requests over recent months have shown me how varied people's needs are. Someone writes that they absolutely need black and white because nothing else fits their minimalist interior. Someone else is specifically looking for warm earth tones or cool blue shades, wanting to convey a very particular mood. Still others simply don't have space for vertical formats and ask for horizontal ones.
Honestly, I'd underestimated that. In my own visual language, vertical format dominates — that's the nature of portrait and nude photography. But of course I also shoot horizontally, and some things actually work better in that format. So why not?
So with this new selection, I actually let your wishes guide me. Black and white images are now included, horizontal formats too. No revolution, but an adaptation to what you're looking for. And that's exactly how I'll continue to handle it going forward.
